1. How far into the game does the grind stop and you have enough skill points to actually explore and do interesting things?
2. How does a new player ever hope to bridge the gap since Eve is a realtime based skill system?
3. Are there any strategies for newbies to hold their own in the universe or are we fodder for those who were in from the begining?
All replies are gratefully received.
1. There is no game imposed grinds. Nothing is stopping you from doing interesting right from the beginning. Just bear in mind, in EVE player cooperation is important. Joining a player corp has a lot of advantages and it puts you right at the heart of EVE. No one in EVE is the best player on the server or most decorated player for doing things alone, all are done and recognized as members of a great corp or alliance. Some people might think the pursue of isk is a grind by itself, true if you actually do repeated tasks for isk, but many have their fortunes not by grinding but by creative gameplay. By trading, pirating or hiring himself out as a mercenary. If it bores you, don't do it. Find your interest in the game by trying different things and have fun in that.
2. Bridging the gap in a sense of skillpoints? No, it is not possible due to the real time training. But bridging the gap in terms for fame, fortune and influence is very possible. And that is what makes a man in EVE. Not skillpoints but fame and influence. No one in EVE brags about how many skillpoints they have on the forums, but everyone brags about their exploits in the political arena, combat expertise, alliance strenght and how they won EVE by doing things out of the box.
3. There are many guides in the forums for newbies to wet their feet in EVE, whether in PVP, trading or missioning. When you are a newbie, your best ability to defend yourself is to escape. No I will not say it's possible for a frigate to kill a battleship because it's almost impossible for a newbie to do so. Just escape it's grasp and I believe you live to fight for another day. But if it is another frigate trying to kill you, why not, just go for it. The adrenaline you get itself is the reward. Fight him as hard as you can, and if you die, which is likely so for your first combat then so be it. It was a good fight. And you will learn some thing about PVP in EVE. It wouldn't cost you a lot to replace your ship and clone, and it's better now to learn how NOT to die earlier than later when your clones becomes more expensive.
